Becoming a United States Citizen is the final step in an immigrant’s journey. U.S. citizens enjoy many benefits including eligibility for a U.S. passport to travel internationally; the right to vote, hold elected office, and apply for certain federal and state jobs; avoiding green card renewal fees and saving up to $465 per Green Card renewal application; more options when petitioning to bring family members permanently to the United States; and the opportunity for citizenship for your resident children under 18 years of age.
A resident will need to show or do the following to be eligible for U.S. citizenship:
- Permanent resident for at least 5 years; or
Permanent resident for at least 3 years if you are married to a US citizen.

- Continuous residency at least 5 (or 3) years prior to filing the application
- Demonstrate physical presence in the United States at least 30 months out of the five years immediately prior to filing the naturalization application
- Demonstrate good moral characters for at least five years before filing the naturalization application (although USCIS will consider your entire criminal record if any)
- Demonstrate an attachment to the principles and ideals of the U.S. Constitution;
- Be able to read, write and speak basic English;
- Have knowledge and understanding of the fundamentals of the history, and of the principles and form of government, of the United States, (civics); and
- Take an Oath of Allegiance to the United States.
